Edge UOL Establishes Partnerships to Accelerate the Adoption of Edge Computing and 5G

Edge UOL has partnered with AWS and Scala Data Centers to accelerate the adoption of Edge Computing and 5G networks in Brazil. The companies will provide digital transformation services that require low latency, local processing, and data residency with AWS Outposts.

According to the project, Edge UOL will provide managed services using AWS Outposts technology. This is a server—available in different sizes—that provides computing, storage, database, and other AWS services locally.

This makes it possible to access the range of AWS services installed in Scala’s edge data centers, interconnected to offer an Edge Computing solution, as well as private and public 5G networks for telecoms operating throughout Brazil.

The idea is for customers to be able to use cloud services and infrastructure offered by AWS to handle local demands that require low latency, local processing, data residency, migrations, and modernizations in a hybrid model.

According to Edge UOL, “this service will provide a competitive advantage and time-to-market to accelerate the adoption of intelligent services anywhere in the country.”

Edge UOL, an independent company created in 2021 as a result of the spinoff of Compass UOL’s IT infrastructure business, relies on its sister company Compass UOL for the development and modernization of applications focused on Edge Computing architecture.

“Edge computing is a relatively new technology, but with great growth potential in a country the size of Brazil. With the infrastructure available today, data generated in locations far from major technology centers, such as agribusiness, factories, stores, distribution centers, and power plants, for example, would need to be sent out to be processed in data centers located miles away. This makes operations less efficient, generates latency, and is resource-consuming,” explains Rodrigo Lobo, COO of Edge UOL.

The implementation of the project “will enable the adoption of innovative cloud technologies at the edge, such as for smart cities—where immediate processing is required,” adds Lobo.

“Smart cities are vital. We are expected to have an additional two billion people in the world by 2050, which makes the challenge even greater with public infrastructure, security threats, crowd management, traffic, and operational efficiency,” he completes.

Cost savings

Scala will build smaller data centers in up to 80% less time than conventional colocation structures, taking into account the stages from project conception to operation. These infrastructures also have reduced operating costs and can generate, on average, savings of 20 to 30%.

“In response to this movement, Scala offers its expertise in colocation services to large cloud and software providers for the construction of decentralized infrastructures, bringing data processing to the edge and, consequently, optimizing the digital experience,” explains Cleber Braz, Scala’s Vice President of Sales & Marketing.

Low latency

AWS Outposts is a service that extends the AWS cloud to locations where customers are looking for low latency, data processing at the edge, and data residency, enabling complex migrations of legacy systems with fewer risks and coexistence in a hybrid cloud model.

“The solution transforms and modernizes data center operations in a service-based model, without the complexities associated with a traditional hybrid cloud. All this with reduced total operating costs, greater resilience, availability, and agility for the business,” says Cleber Morais, Director General of Amazon Web Services in Brazil.
