Edge UOL launches new generation of hybrid cloud to combat hidden costs and vendor lock-in in Brazil

In response to budget pressures and shifts in virtualization, the new infrastructure supports multicloud strategies and local resilience for mission-critical environments

The information technology sector is experiencing a period of strategic reevaluation regarding the use of public clouds. With strained budgets, a lack of contractual flexibility, and currency volatility, a trend has been consolidating among IT executives: the pursuit of hybrid architectures and the repatriation of critical workloads to local private clouds.

According to a study by Barclays, 86% of CIOs from large organizations plan to migrate at least some workloads from the public cloud back to a private cloud or on-premises infrastructure, given that the purely public format – based on variable expenses – has proven to be financially burdensome in the long run.

Industry dynamics have also driven these transitions. The recent acquisition of VMware by Broadcom, for example, triggered a shift in licensing methods and commercial practices, bringing unpredictability and accelerating the search for alternative platforms.

“There was a strong movement towards the public cloud, which has great features, but financial pressure over time and costs tend to be higher than a private architecture,” explains Mauro Cesar de Souza, General Operations Manager at Edge UOL. “In light of this scenario, a massive demand arose from clients who need predictable and flexible alternatives and who simply can no longer sustain themselves under the current model. Positively, there is no single, uniform model for IT delivery.”

To address these spending and governance pain points, Edge UOL has just launched the new generation of Cloud Edge UOL. Designed not to completely replace public clouds, but rather to foster an efficient, complementary, and lock-in-free multicloud approach, the solution allows companies to combine the elasticity of the public cloud for seasonal workloads with the stability and control of a private cloud.

The new Edge UOL Cloud focuses on factors such as:

  • TCO Reduction and Fixed Billing: unlike the unpredictable costs of global clouds, the technology offers full predictability with contracts in Brazilian Reals (BRL). The platform eliminates so-called egress fees (charges levied by public providers for data transfer out), drastically reducing the Total Cost of Ownership in long-term simulations, with real cases of corporations that reduced their TCO by 30% with Edge UOL.
  • Zero Lock-in: built on an open technology stack, the new cloud breaks dependency on expensive and proprietary software licenses, enabling companies to migrate their workloads in waves while maintaining data portability.
  • Native automation and DevOps readiness: the infrastructure integrates an open API architecture, container orchestration via Kubernetes, and network microsegmentation. The ecosystem is natively compatible with modern Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools, such as Terraform/OpenTofu and Ansible, accelerating the delivery cycle for development teams.
  • Extreme Resilience for Critical Applications (DRaaS): designed for systems that do not have maintenance windows, such as PIX and financial platforms, the solution provides managed Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) with geographic replication between two distinct physical data centers in Brazil, delivering optimized RPO and RTO alongside absolute business continuity.
  • Integrated Security: the cloud features native multi-layered protection (infrastructure, platform, and application security) combining AES-256 encryption, WAF, advanced anti-DDoS mitigation, and access governance (IAM/PAM) – all connected to a coordinated 24/7 operation.
Security and compliance on Brazilian soil

Beyond the financial factor, data sovereignty has become a matter of national and legal security for Brazilian companies, especially in highly regulated sectors. In a polarized geopolitical landscape, where major cloud providers are concentrated under US or Chinese jurisdictions, sole reliance on these infrastructures exposes business activities to compliance risks.

“Keeping data and operations under national legislation is no longer just a technical matter, but has become a governance and compliance requirement. Our infrastructure guarantees this legal certainty without limiting our clients’ multicloud strategies,” states Rodrigo Lobo, COO of Edge UOL.

For Edge UOL, this movement reflects a broader transformation in how companies design their infrastructure strategies, replacing rigid models with architectures capable of balancing efficiency, technological freedom, and resilience.

“Instead of being defined by who concentrates the most workloads, the next phase of cloud computing will be governed by who embeds more intelligence to distribute them,” adds Lobo. “The market has matured and realized that there is no single architecture capable of meeting all business needs. Infrastructure has transcended the role of a mere technology layer, solidifying itself as a strategic component of competitiveness. It is this future, based on freedom of choice, efficiency, and resilience, that we want to build and enable in Brazil,” he concludes.
